Descrizione
Questo genere costituisce la maggior parte delladiversitŕ delle rane marsupiali ; precedentemente era collocato nella famiglia "Leptodactylidae". Le rane marsupiali sono cosě chiamate perché possiedono una sacca dorsale della covata. In alcune specie le uova vengono fecondate nella parte bassa della schiena della femmina e vengono inserite nella sua sacca con l'aiuto delle dita dei piedi del maschio. Le uova rimangono in contatto con il tessuto vascolare della femmina, che fornisce loro ossigeno. La Gastrotheca guentheri (rana marsupiale di Guenther) č l'unica rana conosciuta con denti veri nella mascella inferiore. La Gastrotheca riobambae (raganella marsupiale andina) viene tenuta come animale domestico e viene utilizzata in esperimenti scientifici. La Gastrotheca gemma č stata scoperta nel 2021.
Diffusione
Si trovano in America Centrale a sud del Costa Rica e in Sud America. [1] La maggior parte delle specie si trova nella Cordigliera americana dal sud della Costa Rica all'Argentina nord occidentale.
